GETTING STARTED / 4 MIN READ
A smoother arrival.
Start here.
Check your phone and activation rules before buying. Then follow the installation instructions supplied with your chosen eSIM—not a one-size-fits-all sequence.
1. Check your exact phone
You need an eSIM-compatible device that is unlocked for use with another carrier. A familiar model name is not enough: regional variants and carrier restrictions can differ. Check the exact model and country of purchase against your provider’s compatibility information, and ask your US carrier about unlocking if you are unsure.
Do this before checkout. A button labeled “Add eSIM” is useful evidence, but it does not by itself confirm that the phone is carrier-unlocked or suitable for every provider.
2. Read when the clock starts
Installation adds the eSIM profile to your phone. Activation starts the plan’s validity. Those events can happen together or at different times. Airalo explains that some packages start on installation and others on connection to a supported network.
Check the selected package before installing early. Nomad’s Japan page also states a 60-day purchase-to-activation window. Read your confirmation email for exceptions and instructions. Do not buy months ahead on the assumption that the plan can wait indefinitely.
3. Install with a stable connection
Use reliable Wi-Fi and the provider’s app, QR code or manual instructions. Keep the confirmation and setup details available on another screen if needed. Label the new line something recognizable, such as “Japan travel,” so it is easier to select later. Keep activation codes private.
Nomad and Holafly explain their setup flow on their Japan pages. Follow the instructions for your purchased plan and operating-system version; screen names can change.
4. Choose the right data line on arrival
- Select the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable that line.
- Enable data roaming for the travel eSIM if its provider requires it.
- Turn off data roaming on your home line and disable automatic mobile-data switching where available.
- Review whether you need your home line active for calls or messages.
These are general checks, not identical menu paths for every phone. Keeping your US line active can still lead to charges for calls, messages or other carrier services. Data-roaming settings do not guarantee a zero home-carrier bill. See Apple’s roaming guidance and check your carrier’s terms.
5. If it does not connect, ask the provider
Recheck the selected data line, roaming instructions, validity and remaining allowance. Follow the provider’s troubleshooting steps. Do not delete the eSIM as a first fix: it may not be reinstallable. Airalo explains this limitation.
The provider handles activation, account details, payment questions and refunds. Tabi Signal cannot access your purchased eSIM or reset it.
